How To Find An Online Sober Coach

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

The most vulnerable time for an individual recovering from substance abuse and/ or addiction, according to Psychology Today, is in the first ninety days of recovery, as this is when the greatest percentage of relapses occur. Sober coaches are mentors that work individually with clients in the early stages of recovery to co-create customized recovery care plans designed to help individuals adjust to a healthy lifestyle that is free of addiction. Sober coaches are non-clinical professionals that can add an extra layer of support during the beginning of one’s recovery process. Unless a sober coach has a graduate degree and state licensure as a therapist, counselor, or physician they cannot provide commensurate services. The individualized support provided by sober coaches can prove an important linchpin in the continuum of care. To help you find an online sober coach consider the following suggestions:

  • Ask your treatment program: Substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs are well versed in aftercare options and will likely be able to recommend reputable online sober coaches. If they are unable to provide you with an online sober coach recommendation, they will be able to point you in the right direction.

  • Be mindful of qualifications and certifications: Sober coaches are not required to hold any certifications or complete any specialized training, as there are no federal or state licensing standards for sober coaches. Sober coaching is an entirely unregulated profession and there are no formal standardized sober coaching platforms that have been evaluated by any type of clinical research trial. There are some related certifications that can be earned through national and state accrediting bodies, such as the National Certified Peer Specialist (NCPS) certification. The National Certified Peer Specialist certification is a voluntary, examination-based certification that allows peers to demonstrate a high level of experience and competencies in peer support.

  • Make sure they have the time: It is important to make sure an online sober coach has ample availability to take you on as a client.

  • Search the Internet: An Internet search can provide you with certain websites that have compiled lists of online sober coaches, as well as independent websites of freelance online sober coaches that you can check out.

The job of an online sober coach is to help their client’s identify triggers, create coping strategies, find resources, guide them to make decisions that reinforce their sobriety, learn to navigate their newfound life in sobriety, and provide accountability in helping them realize their goals. Every sober coach will have a somewhat unique approach, so it is important to select an online sober coach that aligns with your expectations and needs.
